The AUDI S1 Sportback – A World of Compact Fun

All new Audi S1
All new Audi S1

2014 is shaping up to be an exciting year for new cars from German prestige vehicle manufacturers especially now that Audi has joined the ranks with the June release of its Audi S1.

For those of us who remember the original S1 from the early 80’s when rally cars were (crazy!) rally cars, there is no comparison between the WRC machine and this hot hatch. In fact, the S1 Sportback has everything a driving enthusiast could ask for in a compact hatch.

Performance

A high performance four cylinder unit provides the performance while a 2.0-litre TFSI engine fitted with a turbocharger produces up to 370 Nm of torque and 170kW. A well designed and engineered combination of these propels the car from 0 to 100km/hour in 5.9 seconds, meaning it truly is a pocket rocket. This all comes together with the quattro permanent all wheel drive system to give you a vehicle that makes you look forward to those long lazy Sunday drives in a whole new way.

Style

Audi have released a new range of colours to complement the Sportback, offering vibrant options such as Vegas Yellow and Sepang Blue. There is a rumour that we’ll also see another variation in Australia – Viper Green. Optional extras mean you can brighten up your interior with a choice of interior highlights in red, yellow or black as well as adding a flat bottomed steering wheel. Sports seating outfitted in Milano leather and Olympic cloth are also standard.

But, before you rush out to Audi and place your order, there is one more item to note. The S1 Sportback comes standard in a six-speed manual transmission with no indication that the vehicle will be available in an optional automatic transmission in the immediate future. But, if you don’t mind the ‘chore’ of changing gears and are looking for a car which provides fun in a compact size, this may be the Audi you’re looking for.
