How performane tuning works

Every modern vehicle engine is controlled by an ECU (Electronic Control Unit) – essentially the brain of your engine. It monitors data from dozens of sensors hundreds of times per second, and uses a pre-programmed software “map” to govern how your engine delivers fuel, manages ignition timing, and controls turbo boost pressure.

The problem is manufacturers program the ECU with a standard map designed to work adequately across various climates, fuel qualities and legal restrictions worldwide, not to maximise the potential of your specific vehicle. That compromise leaves real performance on the table.

Performance tuning – also known as ECU remapping or performance mapping – is the process of replacing that generic factory map with a precision-calibrated alternative, written specifically for your German vehicle’s make, model and driving requirements. The remapped ECU adjusts fuel injection, ignition timing and turbo boost pressure to unlock the engine power that was held back.

A Viezu-backed performance remap corrects the generic mapping that comes from the manufacturers, recalibrating your ECU’s fuel injection, ignition timing and turbo boost pressure to unlock the power and efficiency your German engine was designed to deliver.

The Tuning Process at Pace Auto Werks

Your vehicle is booked in over a two-day period. On day one, our technicians connect directly to your ECU via the OBD port and read the existing factory map. That file is processed through the Viezu system and a vehicle-specific remap is written to your exact make, model and requirements. On day two, the remapped software is uploaded back to your ECU and you’re back on the road.

Every remap is calibrated to remain well within your manufacturer’s design parameters — protecting your engine while unlocking its potential. It’s worth noting that a remap can occasionally surface existing mechanical issues the factory map was masking, so we’ll always advise you of anything that warrants attention before or after the tune.

Not sure I picked up the right car last night Simon, It's certainly nothing like the Mini I dropped in in the morning. The inconsistent idle has gone, the acceleration and smooth running together with what is a significant power boost have reminded us why we got into a Cooper S in the first place. Pace Auto Werks have excellent diagnostic and servicing facilities, and I always trust them with my beemer... I had a few car issues since purchasing a second-hand car, and Simon and the crew do their best to get my car booked in as soon as possible if ever there's a problem or general servicing required, they've always been able to diagnose and fix any issues on the day.
