BMW Service Schedule: What You Need To Know

Servicing your vehicle according to the manufacturer’s recommended schedule is a great way to maintain your cars performance, safety and value.

What Is A Service Schedule?

A service schedule, also known as a maintenance schedule, is a timetable for the replacement of your car’s key fluids and components, such as brake pads, spark plugs and oil filters. The schedule outlines the manufacturers recommended time interval or kilometre milestone for these changes to be made. Service schedules are based on various factors including the make and model of vehicle, local driving conditions and driver behaviour.

Why Is A Service Schedule Important?

Adhering to the recommended BMW service schedule aids in avoiding expensive, unexpected repairs, saving you time and money. Maintaining a complete record of your BMW model’s service history can also help to increase its resale value.

Safety

Maintaining a regular service schedule is crucial for ensuring the safety and reliability of your vehicle long term. Generally, a maintenance service will involve checks of important features of the car including the clutch, the brakes, engine, suspension, steering and transmission amongst others. These services ensure your car is in good shape and can help to identify any potential issues before they become disastrous. Well-maintained vehicles also facilitate an improved fuel efficiency and a higher resale value.

Performance

Another benefit of keeping a maintenance schedule for your vehicle is increased performance. Routine maintenance is one of the most effective ways of improving the performance of your car as a few minor adjustments can dramatically enhance the vehicles drivability. Improving handling, braking and fuel efficiency are just a few of the minor enhancements that make a large difference to your driving experience.

Prevention

Failing to service your car means you run the risk of experiencing unexpected problems and potentially catastrophic failures. These incidents often carry a hefty financial cost, not to mention being highly inconvenient. Servicing can uncover hidden engine damage or components that are at risk of failure, even if not necessarily impacting the ability to drive the vehicle. For example, driving with little or no oil in your car can severely damage the internal components of the engine, and can result in the need for extremely costly repairs.

How Do You Know When You Need A Service?

Your car is due for a service if 12 months, or 15,000 kilometres have passed since your vehicles last inspection. Newer models of BMW vehicles will alert you when you are due for a service using the Condition Based Servicing (CBS) dashboard display. Alternatively, some signs you may require a service include:

  • The check engine light appears on the dashboard instrument cluster
  • Unusual noises coming from your vehicle
  • Engine stalling on acceleration
  • Experiencing difficulty getting up to and maintaining speed
  • Unusual brake activity

BMW Recommended Service Scheduling

Dependent on how you drive, where you drive and in what conditions you drive, the type and amount of maintenance your BMW requires will vary. You should always consult the owner’s manual for a detailed breakdown of recommendations and common service tasks.

Below is an example of what a BMW service schedule may look like.

Note: service schedules very between models and will be outlined for each specific model in the owner’s manual.

  • Every 15,000 kilometres, or yearly:
    • Engine oil change, replace oil filter and coolant
  • Every 30,000 kilometres, or every two years:
    • Inspect and replace fuel filters
  • Every 45,000 kilometres, or every three years:
